The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on April 15th, announced the 15-member Team India squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 to be held in England and Wales from May 30. The squad had many surprises with the exclusion of the likes of Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu, both of whom were almost confirmed to make the journey for the tournament.

Unlike Pant, the Hyderabadi batsman couldn’t hide his dejection for long and took to Twitter to post a sarcastic tweet with respect to the reason given for him not been picked for the World Cup. MSK Prasad had said that though Rayudu had done nothing wrong, he cited Vijay Shankar’s “three-dimensional qualities” to justify his selection.

This led to Rayudu to tweet that he has ordered 3D glasses to watch the showpiece event. The tweet has got more than 79,000 likes and 12,000 retweets so far.

BCCI notices the sarcasm in Rayudu’s tweet; decided to let it go

The sarcasm laden message was directed at the BCCI selection panel and the gist of this was not lost on the board top brass that noticed the tweet. However, the board has decided not to take any action on Rayudu.

“We have taken note of what Rayudu has tweeted. (But) Let’s accept that emotions are running high at this moment. There is bound to be a disappointment and there needs to be an outlet of expression as long as it’s not out of line,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by The Quint.

“He will need some time to soak in the disappointment and it’s understandable. There is no need for sanctions. Also, he is one of our standbys. If any injury happens there is every chance, he would go,” the official further added.

Ambati Rayudu, who until recently had the confidence of captain Virat Kohli, was discarded after failures in ODI series against Australia at home and away and also against New Zealand. Rayudu was part of the Indian squad for the ICC World Cup in 2015 but didn’t get to play any match and at the age of 33 years, this was possibly his last chance to play in a World Cup.
