England skipper Eoin Morgan trusted his all-rounder Ben Stokes to bowl the last over for him in the final of the World T20 2016 with everything at stake. Stokes had 19 runs to defend and had the lesser experienced Carlos Brathwaite on the strike. The decision was probably prompted by his ability to bowl yorkers and to not give it away in the death overs like he had done right through the tournament. But, Brathwaite had something else going in his mind. He absolutely clobbered the first four deliveries of the over for four gigantic sixes and scored 24 runs to lift the cup for his team.
Here is how the last over played:
19.1 – Stokes to Brathwaite
Six, it was a poor ball, a half-volley on the leg stump. Brathwaite cleared his front leg and hit it over deep backward square leg. It brought the equation down to 13 from 5.
19.2 – Stokes to Brathwaite
Six, he hits another biggie. This time its way over long-on the bowler is shell-shocked. Stokes attempted a Yorker again and o boy paid a real price for it.
19.3 – Stokes to Brathwaite
Six… Brathwaite hits another six. Unbelievable stuff this. It looked like he hadn’t hit it that well, but the ball still managed to sail over the boundary. West Indies now needed just 1 run to win.
19.4 – Stokes to Brathwaite
Six, he finishes it off with the fourth six of the over. This one went into the stands over deep midwicket and Brathwaite as soon as he hit it knew the job was done. Brathwaite went roaring and Samuels ran towards him from the other end and hugged the man of the moment.
This was a devastating over from Stokes and he was down at the end of it, he couldn’t believe it, but this was some serious hitting. All the balls were attempted yorkers, it was the sheer ability of the batsman that he managed to land all of those among the crowd at the Edens.
After the game Stokes tweeted:
To everyone who has supported us thank you very much you've been awesome…congrats to the West Indies on winning a great final
