Former legendary captain and the President of Cricket Association of Bengal, Sourav Ganguly confirmed that a franchise based regional T20 tournament Bengal Premier League will be held from December and will be played among 6 teams. The tournament will be organised to improve the quality of cricket in the region.

Despite talent being there, we haven’t seen too many players from Bengal going on to represent his nation. Wriddhiman Saha and Mohammed Shami are the current members of the Bengal squad who are permanent fixtures of India’s Test team. In all 3 grounds have been shortlisted for the stadium. Apart from Eden Gardens and the Jadavpur University Campus Ground, one district association ground will play host to the Bengal Premier League (BPL) matches.

Floodlights have to be installed in the Jadavpur university Campus Ground and also in the district stadium. “I have signed a contract with IMG-R. There will be six teams taking part and three grounds have been allotted for the tournament,” Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata. The auctions will likely take place from the last week of August.

“This is being done to promote Bengal cricket,” Ganguly quipped. Meanwhile, he was also of the opinion that India will fare pretty well in the upcoming Champions Trophy scheduled to be played in England and Wales from 1st June to 18th June. The Men in Blue will start the tournament as the defending champions as they won the 2013 edition in the same country.

Ganguly feels one change won’t affect the combination of the team in CT

Meanwhile, Manish Pandey was ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a left sight strain and Dinesh Karthik has been named as his replacement. Karthik was also a part of the national team when India won the 2013 edition by defeating England in the final. Ganguly felt that India will have a good campaign and one change won’t have a bearing on the results.”India will do well in the ICC Champions Trophy. The squad looks good and one change won’t affect much,” Ganguly signed off. The defending champions meet arch-rivals Pakistan in their first encounter of the season on 4th June.
