Sachin Tendulkar definitely knows a thing or two about being a ‘wonder boy’ and it would not be entirely wrong to say that India’s latest batting sensations Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill are pretty much on the same path. While only time will tell whether they manage to replicate Tendulkar’s unbelievable exploits in the game, the start has been very promising. Both the youngsters have not looked back since starring in India’s victorious campaign at the ICC Under-19 World Cup last year.

The starring performance in the World Cup helped both the players earn lucrative Indian Premier League deals. While Shaw was bought by Delhi-based outfit for INR 1.2 crore, Gill bagged INR 1.8 crore from Kolkata Knight Riders. Both the players then pretty much justified their price tags with the latter scoring 203 runs from 11 games and Shaw finishing the season with 245 runs in 9 outings.

It soon paved their way in the India A side and they impressed there too. The performances then helped Shaw earn his maiden Test call-up for the home series against Windies where he scored a century on his debut and in the process became the youngest Indian to do so. On the other hand, Gill earned his maiden international call-up for the limited-overs tour of New Zealand. However, he could not make the chances count and managed to score just 7 and 9 in two innings.

Tendulkar goes gaga over Shaw and Gill

With both the players showing all the right signs from early days, Sachin Tendulkar has lavished praise on them.  The legendary batsman also said that the duo should enjoy their game.

“I’ve spoken about Prithvi Shaw earlier as well, having watched him bat in the nets as a little boy, all of 8-9 years of age, he had something special even back then. I knew instantly that he would play for India,” Tendulkar said while speaking to the Times of India.

“Shubman also played a crucial role in last year’s U-19 World Cup and has had a good domestic season, so both of them (Prithvi and Shubman) have a lot of potential. Having said that, these boys have just started playing for India and they should enjoy their cricket,” the master added.
