It took a lot of time for Ajaz Patel to make his presence felt to the New Zealand selectors and once he did, he grabbed his first opportunity with both hands in the most scintillating way possible. On his debut, he picked up a five-fer in the second innings against Pakistan and helped his side register one of the finest wins in their history.
Talking about that win and his man of the match performance, Patel said that New Zealand’s never-say-die attitude was at display in that game. Defending a total as below par as 175 against the hosts, the Kiwis just about snatched a 4-run win. He spoke at length about the self-belief that exists among the current crop of players and how it helped them overcome the tricky situation.
“To be honest we had the belief that it can happen on this wicket which wasn’t easy to bat on and we kept that belief that we can pull that off. I think it’s a very much a New Zealand environment thing, that is that everything is possible at any point of time and we always go out and fight regardless of chasing or defending a small total or a large total,” said Patel as quoted by CNN News 18.
Looking forward to the India series
Born in Mumbai, Ajaz Patel knows a thing or two about being an Indian cricket fan. He and his family migrated to New Zealand when he was six-years-old. His 48-wicket campaign in the domestic circuit for Central Stags helped him win a place in the National side and now he’s looking forward to playing against India next year. He also said that bowling to Virat Kohli would be a great challenge.
“As a growing Indian you are always passionate about cricket and you watch a lot of great Indian players just like I have watched New Zealand players. Kohli will be a great challenge. You always want to challenge yourself against the best and he is the best in the world. So if that comes I will cherish it and give it the best crack,” the off-spinner said.
