BPL 2019: Steve Smith to miss next two games for Comilla Victorians

Australian cricketer Steven Smith who is playing for Comilla Victorians in the latest edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to miss the next two matches because of an elbow injury. The former Aussie captain will return to Sydney for a check-up and is likely to return to the tournament sometime next week. The Victorians skipper has played two games in the tournament so far but hasn’t succeeded to produce anything magical yet, scoring 16 runs and going wicketless.

The 29-year-old cricketer had an earlier elbow injury which has flared up in the last couple of days, making him miss the two games. The cricketer will undergo an MRI scan and will inform the franchise about his medical status. Smith, along with David Warner, was banned from international cricket for a year following their involvement in the Sandpapergate scandal in South Africa last month and the two have focused on playing franchise cricket in this period.

“He is quite positive about returning, possibly during the Sylhet phase of the competition,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Victorians’ media manager Sohanuzzaman Khan as saying. “He will undergo an MRI in Australia, which isn’t available in Bangladesh, and will inform us about it.”

Comilla Victorians will need some boosting wins

The 2015 champions, Victorians are at the fifth position in the table now with one win and a loss in two games and will look forward to a boost in the next few matches. They will face Rajshahi Kings and Chittagong Vikings in Dhaka on January 11 and 13, respectively, before shifting focus to Sylhet. Smith’s participation in the BPL made some news after the organisers had to change the drafting rules to make way for his accommodation.

The Australian national team has been badly missing Steve Smith and Warner as it has been facing one after another debacle on the ground. Their latest shock came in the 1-2 loss in a Test series against India, first time ever in history, thanks to a brittle batting display by the hosts. Former England captain Michael Vaughan though said that nothing much will change for Australia even if Smith and Warner made a comeback.
