Adrian St. John, a 22-year old budding English cricketer was reportedly murdered by a gunshot during an armed robbery attempt in Trinidad. The incident was said to have occurred on Sunday night with the local media reports confirming the arrest of a 24-year old. The arrested person is said to be a prime suspect in the robbery that has taken place.

St. John has played for the for Alleyn Cricket Club in south London as well as being a prominent part of his university cricket team, the University of  Hertfordshire. However, what will catch the eye of one and all is the fact that he was the captain of the Chris Gayle academy side. the academy has been functional since 2013 with the motto to “improve access to good quality education, training, and employment for at-risk young people in Jamaica and the UK”.

Gayle tweeted: “Such sad news to hear. My condolences to his family & friends. Adrian St John was the captain of the academy. #Sigh.”

Donovan Miller, the programme manager for the Chris Gayle Foundation, said: “I’m really finding it hard to come to terms with it, how someone could do something like that to such a lovely person.”

Donovan also added that St. John had been one of the first to be accepted into the academy. “He wanted me to support him to go to the Caribbean,” he said, “and to kind of push hard with his cricket.”

The local media reports suggest that Adrian St. John had parked his car to pick up a couple of friends and had been inadvertently shot while trying to drive away from the robbery. The Foreign office of the United Kingdom released a statement stating that it was in contact with the Trinidadian authorities following the death of a British native on Caribbean soil.
