U-17 World Cup is the biggest ever Fifa event to be held in India. The tournament has generated a lot of buzz in the country and will lead to a rise in popularity of the sport in the country. The World Cup is scheduled to begin on 6th October. Colombian Great Carlos Valderrama has come to Kolkata as a part of a three-day visit to India. Valderrama is a Fifa legend for the U-17 World Cup and is on a promotional tour for the event.
Carlos Valderrama gives a surprise
The Colombian legend was returning from Mohun Bagan when he decided to make an unscheduled stopover at the Eden Gardens. Sourav Ganguly was unaware of the visit of the Colombian legend, and Carlos Valderrama had to wait to meet the former Indian captain.
Kolkata’s cricket icon, Sourav Ganguly was busy in a promotional shoot. After finishing up the shoot, ‘Dada’ met Valderrama, who was in a Mohun Bagan jersey. An official present there said that Colombian legend knew a few things about cricket, so they planned the meet with Sourav Ganguly.
“He has heard a few things about cricket so we took him to Eden Gardens to meet Ganguly. It was just a perfect meeting of the two legends of different sports. Yes, they spoke about cricket,” The official told PTI
Carlos Valderrama has not lost his skills
Earlier, the 56-year old mesmerized the Kolkata crowd when he scored a goal via a penalty kick. The Colombian legend took the spot-kick, which was well beyond the reach of goalkeeper Shilton Paul.
The Mohun Bagan players were excited to meet the legendary footballer. One Mohun Bagan player was very thrilled to meet Carlos Valderrama, whose exploits in the 1990 World Cup are well documented.
“It was great meeting the Colombian great. We have seen his exploits in the 1990 World Cup,” the Mohun Bagan player said after sharing a photo frame along with Valderrama.
