In spite of having won their first series against Australia for a long time, Aravinda de Silva and other Sri Lanka Cricket Board officials have tasked former Lankan pacer Chaminda Vaas with finding fast-bowling talent in the country. Vaas, who announced his retirement in August 2008 has been serving as a bowling consultant for the Sri Lankan cricket team for some time now. Moreover, the fact that the Lankans are setting their sights on winning outside the country, they will be hoping that Vaas can deliver the goods for them.

Aravinda de Silva, the chairman of the selectors was forced to hand a debut to 19-year old Vishwa Fernando with none of their premier bowlers fit for action. De Silva, who has skippered the side previously has reiterated the importance of Sri Lanka winning outside the country.“We have to develop teams to win outside the country… not just on turning wickets, but to win in Australia on those fast wickets,” he told reporters.

At the moment, the fact remains that the Lankans have managed to secure their first series win over the Sri Lankans in almost 17 years. However, they have managed to do it solely due to the brilliance of Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath who have had an unbelievable amount of purchase from both the Pallekele and Galle tracks respectively.

De Silva added that Vaas was indeed keen on taking the role and was interested in developing pacers as part of their grassroots program.“Vaas is keen to take a role, which we feel he will be really good at, to develop some of our young cricketers from grassroots levels,” de Silva said.
