Chennai stadium may host world T20 game: Reliable reports have emerged in certain sections of the media that Chennai may serve as a world T20 venue. The three stands of the Chennai MA Chidambaram stadium G, H and I had not got environmental clearance and not many expected Chennai to host a game during the T20 world cup, next year.

But, things have brightened up for the fervid cricket fans of Tamil Nadu. In the recently-concluded annual meeting of the ICC, one understands that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) officials got together to decide on the venues for the World T20 matches.

A BCCI source close to the developments was quoted by TOI saying, “A part of the Madras Cricket Club gymnasium needs to be demolished to get the requisite 8m space between the stands and the next building. TNCA has promised that it will be done much ahead of the World Cup and if that happens, Chennai should stay in the list. Chepauk is after all a very important venue of Indian cricket,”

The BCCI was represented in the ICC Chief Executives’ meeting by secretary Anurag Thakur while N Srinivasan, the ICC chairman, was the representative for India in the Board meeting.
Chennai was included in the provisional list of venues for the World Cup, even though it is upto the BCCI to decide which games they want to allocate to Chennai. “India will have four games, then there are two semifinals and the final. We’ll decide which game Chennai will get,” the source added.

Incidentally, the Board has already scheduled one ODI against South Africa and a part of the A’ tri-series against Australia and South Africa at Chennai.
