He is often called the new wall of the Indian batting line-up. Thirty-year-old Cheteshwar Pujara will be looking to reassert his role as an anchor for his team in the longest format during the big five-match series coming up against England. Pujara was one of the earliest of the Indian players to begin his preparation for the English summer as he started representing Yorkshire in county cricket while most others were busy with their Indian Premier League commitments. He had a fairly decent stint in a county and now sounds confident about the series starting August 1.

Pujara recently spoke to DNA during an interview covering various aspects of his cricket and also the England series. He said his stint with Yorkshire will help his batting during the Tests and how life is easier for Indian players leading a life in the county.

Pujara quashes the ‘trade secrets’ of England’s team insights

When asked how it was playing alongside Joe Root, one of England’s top batsmen who also bagged the man of the series award in the recent ODI series thanks to his top-class batting, in Yorkshire and whether the latter gave him any insights into the host team, Pujara said there was nothing as such.

“Nowadays, all matches are televised. When England played Pakistan, we saw what team they played. We don’t need any extra insight. Everything is open now. They also know what the Indian team is about. You have all the info in the world. When I talk to Joe Root, I talk about international experience, the opponents, the different teams he has played against, as a batsman, as a cricketer how someone prepares, the kind of life one lives.”

He went on to add, “You always discuss normal things, not always about cricket. I don’t think there is anything extra you need to know. There is enough footage. You know what their bowling strengths and weaknesses are,” Pujara, who has scored 4,531 runs in 58 Tests so far, said in the interview.
