India’s Test star Cheteshwar Pujara has had a very good 2018-19 season as he produced a Man of the Series performance in India’s maiden Test series win in Australia. Pujara scored more than 500 runs and hit three centuries with the best score of 193 to script history with the team. However, despite his accomplishments in red-ball cricket and then for Saurashtra in the domestic limited-overs tournament, Pujara didn’t get a bid in the IPL 2019 auction.

The 31-year-old has played IPL for three teams- KKR, RCB, and KXIP and has appeared in 30 matches making 390 runs at a strike rate of 99.24 with one fifty. However, he hasn’t been considered a cricketer fit for the shortest format of the game, despite constantly pressing to get rid of the tag. Pujara will now be a part of the Saurashtra Premier League, the domestic T20 tournament, which begins on May 14.

Pujara to be available for selection for the five participating teams

Pujara has a decent record in the shortest format of the game, having scored 1356 runs in 64 matches with 7 half-centuries and one century at a strike rate of 109.35 and average of 29.47.

“Five teams are participating in this maiden SPL and now teams can select Cheteshwar Pujara for the SPL as he shall be available to play in the SPL. The final decision about Pujara representing which team will be taken tomorrow (Thursday) in the presence of five teams owners and representative of the independent auditor,” the Saurashtra Cricket Association conveyed the message via a media statement.

Pujara, a Test specialist, of late, has been playing in different T20 leagues, including the DY Patil T20 Cup, which is annually held in Navi Mumbai. Pujara will also be playing in the English County cricket, while the Indian team will participate in the ICC World Cup 2019 in the UK.

“Everyone involved in SPL is immensely happy that finally Cheteshwar got the window from his commitment to county cricket at England and has expressed his availability to participate in this T20 tournament,” the release added.
