Geoffrey Boycott scored his 100th first-class ton in an Ashes Test at his home ground 40 years ago. On the 40th anniversary of that milestone, Boycott’s family is planning a charity dinner at the cricketer’s house on August 11. Presently covering the series between England and South Africa for BBC’s iconic Test Match Special, Boycott was pranked by his co-commentator Jonathan Agnew.

The co-commentator faked to read from an ICC press release during the last day of the third Test between South Africa and England, which the hosts won comprehensively. He read out saying that as per ICC’s latest rule, all statistics from the series played between England and Rest of the World in 1970 will be downgraded, to which Boycott was left fuming.

“Further to the recent request from the South African government, the ICC has now considered the question of downgrading the status of all statistics, including runs and wickets from the series, played between England and Rest of the World in 1970,” Agnew explained. “The ICC agrees that the series was played against the spirit of the Gleneagles Agreement and that in the interests of keeping cricket free from political interference, all matches will be removed from first-class records.”

A completely fuming Boycott

Boycott said this was ridiculous of the ICC. Agnew, on the other hand, asked the legendary batsman to call off the celebrations scheduled for August 11, to which the 76-year-old said that all the necessary preparations were made already and now they cannot cancel the event. “That’s just silly, isn’t it? First-class umpires, first-class players, some of the best players in the world were playing. That Rest of the World team was a fantastic team. It’s a mess, a complete mess,” Boycott exclaimed.

Later on, the former England batsman took to Twitter and vowed to seek revenge from Agnew.
