County Championship 2022: Glamorgan's Sam Northeast scores 400 against Leicestershire, joins elite list

Northeast became only the 11th batter to break the 400-run barrier in a first-class innings.

Glamorgan batter Sam Northeast became only the fourth batter to score 400 runs in County Championship innings. He achieved the feat in only 447 balls against Leicestershire on July 23, Saturday, in Leicester. The 32-year-old has now joined the elite list, comprising Brian Lara, AC MacLaren and Graeme Hick, who have scored 400 runs in an innings in the competition.

Northeast also became only the 11th batter ever to break the 400-run barrier in a first-class innings. He was on 308 runs by the end of Day 3, and by the end of lunch on Day 4, he stood on 410 off 450 balls, including 45 fours and three sixes. His innings helped his team reach 795 for the loss of five wickets in 160 overs.

Northeast and Chris Cooke add 461 runs for the sixth wicket

Northeast made his first-class debut in 2007 and has amassed close to 12,000 runs from 192 matches with 27 hundreds and 61 fifties. He and his batting partner Chris Cooke added 461 runs by the end of the fourth day’s lunch. Cooke remained unbeaten on 191 runs off 227 balls, with 19 fours and three sixes.

Leicestershire batted first in the match after winning the toss and scored 584 in 148 overs. Wiaan Mulder, coming in at No. 5, scored 156 runs off 201 balls, and Ben Mike, at No. 8, scored 91 runs off 148 balls. Off-spinner Andrew Salter picked up four wickets and fast bowler Michael Hogan got three scalps.

In their first innings, Glamorgan were in trouble early on as they lost both their openers David Lloyd and Eddie Byrom within seven overs. South African batter Colin Ingram arrived at No. 3 and scored 139 runs off 236 balls. The third-wicket partnership between Ingram and Northeast was worth 306. Meanwhile, after Kiran Carlson and Billy Root were dismissed for 9 and 0 respectively, in came Cooke.

It has been a tough game for the bowlers. However, for the home team, the pick of the bowlers was Chris Wright who picked up three wickets for 99 runs in 27 overs.
