On Thursday, India was left devastated as a young suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a CRPF bus in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, killing several jawans and critically injuring many others. The attack, the deadliest on India’s armed forces in recent times, saw furious reactions coming out from various quarters. The cricketers also did not hide their shock and spoke out on social media platforms.

The attack happened when the bus was on Jammu-Srinagar highway in Lethpora town, located about 30 kilometers from Srinagar. Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit claimed responsibility for the attack. India’s vice-captain in limited-over formats Rohit Sharma posted a tweet that summed up the thought process of every Indian after a disaster of such a magnitude.

The 31-year-old batsman said in a tweet that “cowards spread hatred” on the day when the world was celebrating love (Valentine’s Day) and expressed his solidarity with the martyred jawans and their families. “India keep them in your prayers,” he said.

Rohit likely to be rested for Australia series

The dashing opening batsman is likely to be rested for India’s upcoming T20I and ODI series against Australia at home starting February 24. The man has been playing cricket continuously since the three-match ODI series against Australia. He missed a couple of Tests Down Under because of injury and birth of his daughter Samaira in December end. Rohit rushed home for a week to be with his wife Ritika and the newborn and missed the fourth Test in Sydney.

Since then, he has been playing continuously and played in eight ODIs (three against Australia and five against New Zealand) and three T20Is against the Black Caps. He hit one hundred and three fifties in these games and also captained India in their last five limited-over games (two ODIs and three T20Is) as regular skipper Virat Kohli took a break after securing a win in the ODI series in New Zealand. He won one and lost one in the ODIs and then lost the T20I series 1-2 as India lost the deciding match in Hamilton by just four runs.

He will lead Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League starting next month and then focus on the all-important World Cup in May-July.
