Carlos Brathwaite is an animated character on the field owing to which he has been part of a few on-field controversies. Last year in December, playing for the West Indies, he blasted the umpires for a controversial no-ball call in a T20I series versus Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. After round nine months, the all-rounder got himself tangled into another mid-pitch brawl.

The incident took place in the Eliminator of the CPL at the Providence Stadium in Guyana during the match between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Trinbago Knight Riders. In TKR’s run-chase, Brathwaite, the skipper of the Patriots, wasn’t happy with opposition batter Lendl Simmons by any means. After the second ball of the over by Fabian Allen, Carlos came charging at the Knights’ batter.

He was seemingly not pleased with Simmons talking to his partner mid-way through the over. Carlos came and broke the bails and then appealed. Then he hurled some stern words at Simmons. On-field umpire Gregory Brathwaite had to intervene such was the scenario. Kieron Pollard, the skipper of TKR in absence of Dwayne Bravo, wanted to send a message, but the fourth umpire stopped him.

Not a great day for Carlos Brathwaite

It wasn’t a day to remember for Ricky, as Carlos is popularly known. The Patriots crashed out of the CPL after losing the match by six wickets. After being put in to bat first, his team could only manage a score of 125 in 20 overs. It was mostly due to Laurie Evans’ 47-ball 55 that held the innings together. The rest of the batters didn’t have much clue about what was unfolding.

Sunil Narine, who played with an injured finger, rattled them, picking up two wickets and conceding 10 runs in his four overs. In the second innings, TKR found it tough initially, consuming a number of dot balls. Denesh Ramdin had once played 30 balls and scored 13 runs, adding pressure on Simmons.

Simmons got out to Brathwaite eventually after scoring 51 runs. Unfortunately for the Patriots, Ramdin gained in momentum. Pollard notched 26 off nine balls, helping TKR win with eight balls to spare. For Brathwaite, he conceded 39 runs in 3.4 overs and was the Patriots’ most expensive bowler.
