The 23rd match of the CPL 2020 is scheduled between the Trinbago Knight Riders and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on 2nd September, at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad.
The clash is of two teams with opposing fates in this year’s tournament. The Trinbago Knight Riders have been unstoppable and have won all their matches without breaking a sweat. Their streak of 7 wins is a record and they have undoubtedly looked the most accomplished side in the tournament. On the other hand, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ campaign has been a disaster, to say the least. Having played as many games, the Patriots have managed to win only once and are placed right at the bottom of the table.
In this match too, they are coming after being battered by the Guyana Amazon Warriors by 7 wickets. They posted a fighting total of 150 runs at the loss of 5 wickets courtesy the watchful knocks of Joshua da Silva and Denesh Ramdin, but their bowling attack proved to be too mild in front of the might of the centurion Nicholas Pooran, who raced off to his ton in just 45 balls. With their over-reliance on a misfiring top-order, failing middle-order, and lack of discipline and intent in the bowling unit, the bucket of problems for the Patriots has been brimming right since the start.
The Riders, on the other hand, scripted a convincing victory over Jamaica Tallawahs and have continued their unhindered momentum. Kieron Pollard’s men posted a daunting total of 184 courtesy a quick-fire cameo of 33 runs by the skipper himself and a brilliant anchoring knock of 65 from Colin Munro apart from generous contributions by the openers. Despite some resistance from Glenn Phillips and Andre Russell, the Riders went onto defend their target as they defeated Tallawahs by 19 runs.
The Riders will be clear favorites in this game given their dream run, while the Patriots must look to press themselves without being scared of their adversary’s might.
Pitch and conditions
The forecast shows high chances of rains and some weather-based restrictions can be expected for sure. Owing to the overcast conditions, the pacers will get assistance whereas the spinners have never remained quiet this year, so that is the given part of the equation. Chasing has been the norm and that seems to be the way forward in this game too.
Playing combination
Trinbago Knight Riders
The Riders must be happy to have Sunil Narine back in the eleven and he is expected to open alongside Lendl Simmons after they both had a decent outing in their last game. Colin Munro displayed his range beautifully during his 65-run knock against the Tallawahs and he would want to continue giving such performances at No. 3.
Tim Seifert did not get many chances to prove himself at the start of the tournament but he has played well and has contributed as per requirement. Skipper Kieron Pollard’s form was a concern in the initial days, however, one knock is all it took for him to get back to his ways. The Bravo brothers have been in contention as well and though they have been slightly inconsistent at times, they will form the middle-order in this game.
Fawad Ahmed bagged a couple of wickets at a decent economy whereas Akeal Hosein, Khary Pierre, Sunil Narine, and Dwayne Bravo all got one apiece. Jayden Seales, who went expensive and wicket-less last time, might miss for Sikandar Raza.
Predicted XI- Lendl Simmons, Sunil Narine, Colin Munro, Tim Seifert (WK), Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard (C), Dwayne Bravo, Akeal Hosein, Khary Pierre, Sikandar Raza, Fawad Ahmed
Bench- Pravin Tambe, Jayden Seales, Anderson Philip, Ali Khan
St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots
The over-reliance of the Patriots on Chris Lynn and Evin Lewis has been a major issue for them. The duo of Lewis and Kieran Powell was tried in the last game but that strategy did not work either as both of them failed to score. Joshua da Silva has been their talisman a number of times and that is precisely what he did through his half-century in the last game as well.
Ben Dunk has not been firing the way he would have liked but he is expected to play alongside the experienced Denesh Ramdin, who played a decent hand in the last game. Skipper Rayad Emrit has been shining consistently with the ball, however, his contribution has not led to any results due to the lack of support around him.
Sohail Tanvir has been in good form though he went wicket-less in the last game as did leg-spinner Imran Khan after two brilliant performances. Jon-Russ Jaggesar and Alzarri Joseph were the only ones who got a wicket and they will be in the eleven apart from Ish Sodhi.
Predicted XI- Evin Lewis, Kieran Powell, Joshua Da Silva, Ben Dunk, Dinesh Ramdin (WK), Sohail Tanvir, Rayad Emrit (C), Ish Sodhi, Imran Khan, Alzarri Joseph, Jon-Russ Jaggesar
Bench- Sheldon Cottrell, Jahmar Hamilton, Chris Lynn, Colin Archibald
