CPL 2021: Furious Sherfane Rutherford throws away cricketing gear after being dismissed run-out

Rutherford, currently the tournament’s second-highest scorer (201 runs from seven innings at 40.20), entered into bat when the Patriots, who opted to bat upon winning the toss, were tottering at 28/3, having lost their top-order cheaply, with Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle and Andre McCarthy adding 10 runs combined amongst themselves. After a brief stand alongside opener Devon Thomas, Rutherford was joined by Asif Ali as Thomas perished for a 19-ball 28, leaving his team precariously placed at 52/4.

With three half-centuries in the season already, the Patriots’ hopes lied once again on Rutherford, although a mix up around the halfway mark of their innings meant that he had to walk back without being able to add much to his team’s tally.

The incident occurred in the 10th over of Patriots’ innings, when Rutherford opted to go for a second run that his partner Asif Ali had no interest in, leading eventually to a simple run out at the non-striker’s end. The second run seemed there for the taking as Rutherford (14 off 16) managed to reach to the other end, but with Ali holding his ground firmly without showing any interest whatsoever, it turned out to be a suicidal attempt for the in-form batter, who walked furiously back to the pavilion before throwing all of his cricketing gears rather lividly.

One would suspect how would Ali face Rutherford’s wrath later, as he was himself undone soon afterwards for a 14-ball 18. Patriots, who currently occupy the top spot with five wins from six fixtures, never got going in their innings, as the Kings managed to restrict them for an unimposing 118 all-out in 19.3 overs, with Kings’ Jeavor Royal being the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets in his quota of four.

Royal was well-assisted by Kesrick Williams and Samit Patel, who got two each, while Wahab Riaz and Keemo Paul got one each.
