India currently occupy fourth position on the World Test Championship table with a points percentage of 51.52% after 11 matches. The team's record stands at five wins, four losses and two draws. Following their recent draw in Colombo, India have seven Tests remaining in the league phase, worth a combined 84 points. With only the top two teams advancing to the WTC Final, India face a steep climb to secure qualification.
Five of those remaining Tests will be played at home against Australia, while two away matches await in New Zealand. To reach a safe qualification mark of approximately 64%, India must win at least five of these seven matches and draw one, or alternatively secure six wins. The exact threshold remains fluid and depends on how other teams finish the cycle. Historical data shows that three of the four finalists in the last two WTC cycles exceeded at least 65% points percentage. India's sole exception came in the 2023 cycle when they qualified with approximately 58.8%.
Remaining fixtures and qualification scenarios
Australia currently lead the WTC standings at 75%, with New Zealand and South Africa pursuing closely behind. India's current qualification probability stands at just 3%, placing them alongside Bangladesh at the same percentage. Sri Lanka and England have even slimmer chances at 0.2% and 0.1% respectively.
The mathematics are unforgiving: India will have played 18 matches by the end of the cycle, making the maximum available points 216. Each win is worth 12 points while a draw yields 4 points.
The scenario requiring six wins from seven Tests would see India accumulate 72 additional points from those victories, bringing their total to approximately 123 points from 18 matches. This would translate to a points percentage of 56.94%, which falls short of the likely qualification threshold.
The alternative path of five wins and one draw would yield 64 additional points, resulting in approximately 115 points total and a percentage of 53.24%, also insufficient for qualification. The Shubman Gill-led side's only realistic pathway demands near-perfect cricket across both home and away conditions against two of the world's strongest Test teams.
