Following two back-to-back dismal outings, five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners, Mumbai Indians (MI) are gearing up for their third game of the 2023 season. They play a team that carries a similar fate, with three losses in three matches, David Warner’s Delhi Capitals (DC).

The two sides will square off in match 16 of the ongoing season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday, April 11. Speaking about their head-to-head records in the five outings, Delhi has a slight upper hand with three wins to Mumbai’s two. Both franchises will be vying to earn their first points in the 16th edition with a resounding win in the upcoming clash.

Here's Mumbai Indians’ predicted XI against Delhi Capitals

Openers: Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan (wk)

Mumbai’s opening duo of skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan have failed to hand solid head starts in the two matches. While Ishan Kishan relishes taking advantage of the powerplay (1-6 overs) and getting the big runs, Rohit likes to take some time and get into his element.

However, the two have been unable to convert their scores into bigger ones and have eventually succumbed during the matches. With that said, it won’t take much time before the skipper, and the southpaw get back into their zone and make headlines in the upcoming matches.

Middle Order: Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Tim David

One of the names in the entire unit that can single-handedly win matches is Suryakumar Yadav. The flamboyant right-hander is known to give a hard time to the rival bowlers with his exquisite cricketing shots, earning him huge runs.

However, the batter off-late has endured a dismal run even prior to the ongoing IPL 2023. In the three ODIs against Australia, Suryakumar registered three golden ducks on the trot and followed it with 15 and one, respectively, in the first two IPL matches. One of his most significant plus points is his ability to keep calm despite the noise around him, and he will look to ply his trade for Mumbai and make amends to shine in the forthcoming outings.

It took just 46 balls for Tilak Varma to announce himself in the ongoing season with an unbeaten knock of 84 runs against RCB. Clobbering four maximums and nine boundaries, the young sensation maintained a phenomenal strike rate of 182.61 in the contest. However, against CSK, he could only manage to get 22 runs after getting trapped by star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. In any case, the 20-year-old has much to fight for, and the cricketing fans will be eager to see more of his batting prowess.

Tim David has the potential to come down the order and give his side the required big runs to attain a competitive total. Assuming the top order fails to hit the ground running, Tim will aim to take the Delhi bowling unit by storm with his towering maximums.

All-rounder: Cameron Green

Mumbai roped in Cameron Green to fill the Kieron Pollard-sized void in the setup in the mini-auction. It is not easy to swiftly replace the Caribbean legend in the line-up, considering the kind of impact he had in the league. However, Green is trying to fit in and create a lasting impression to help his side get ahead in the contest.

With the bat, he has endured back-to-back dismal outings, getting five and 12 runs, respectively, in both matches. However, with the ball, Green has shown some improvement but is yet to get to his lethal best for the franchise. He would be raring to weave his magic and turn his game around for good in the upcoming games.

Bowlers: Piyush Chawla, Jofra Archer, Arshad Khan, Jason Behrendorff, Hrithik Shokeen

Arshad Khan and Hrithik Shokeen proved quite expensive in the previous outing against an experienced CSK batting unit. While Hrithik went for 19 runs in just two overs, Arshad, on the other hand, seemed like an easy target as he leaked 35 runs in mere 2.1 overs. Despite being expensive, the skipper and the management will back the youngsters to up the ante and put on a better show against Delhi Capitals.

Archer was absent from the XI in the high-octane clash against CSK as he experienced discomfort in his right elbow following the match against RCB. Notably, the English paceman gave away 33 runs in the first outing in his four overs. While a lot is expected out of the pacer in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Archer will look to deliver the goods, starting with Delhi in the upcoming match.

Against RCB, Behrendorff proved to be quite expensive as he leaked 37 runs in mere three overs. However, in the following match, the New South Wales-born pacer had a relatively improved outing, getting the vital scalp of Devon Conway and concluding with an economy of 8.00 by giving 24 runs in three overs.

34-year-old leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has faired well for the five-time winners thus far by helping restrict runs. However, the spinner is yet to produce innings-defining moments by getting the breakthroughs during the clashes. While there is still some time to get back on track, Piyush will aim to deck Delhi’s line-up with his sharp turn.

Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan (wk), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Tim David, Jofra Archer, Arshad Khan, Hrithik Shokeen, Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff

Nehal Wadhera, Vishnu Vinod, Tristan Stubbs, Sandeep Warrier, Ramandeep Singh.
