Brendon McCullum is a New Zealand cricket coach and former player who was the head coach of the England men's cricket team in T20s and ODIs and formerly Test matches until his sacking as England Test coach in July 2026. In the 2014 IPL auctions, McCullum was bought by Chennai Super Kings and was given the role of opening the innings along with West Indian Dwayne Smith, and the pair were considered the most dangerous opening pair in the league's history. McCullum has played 109 matches in his IPL career and has scored 2,881 runs, with an average of 27.70, including 2 centuries and 13 half centuries, with his highest IPL score being 158 not out.

McCullum's intimate knowledge of CSK's operations combined with his recent experience managing England's international setup brings tactical expertise and an understanding of modern cricket structures. However, his recent departure from England's Test role and continuing responsibilities as England's white ball coach until 2027 present potential availability challenges. McCullum will remain in charge of the England white-ball teams after a successful spell that saw England reach the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and recently climb to No. 1 in the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings. Any appointment would need to navigate these international commitments carefully.
