1. India's difficult run in Test cricket
India's Test results over the past year or so have reflected a difficult period for the side. The team suffered home series defeats to both New Zealand and South Africa, results that underlined a painful transition phase in their red-ball setup. The departure of several senior players has left a noticeable gap in experience and technique within the Test XI.
A packed multi-format calendar has also limited red-ball preparation time for many Indian players. Ravindra Jadeja's return to the squad after recovering from a tennis elbow injury sustained during IPL 2026 in May is a boost, but the overall depth and cohesion of the Test unit remain works in progress. The two-Test series will be a key opportunity for Sri Lanka to capitalise on India's current vulnerabilities and collect important WTC points.
