IPL 2025 has seen a sharp drop in fielding standards, and with only 50 games into this season, plenty of drops, sloppy work while saving the ball and missed run-outs compared to any other year. Players have dropped more than 115 catches in just 50 matches, the most since 2020. The overall catching efficiency this season has fallen to 75.2 per cent, the lowest in five years.

Also, plenty of misfields and missed run-outs show a worrying trend. One of the most used phrases in cricket - Catches Win Matches, but the overall efficiency to manage a hold of the ball has caused troubles, with Chennai Super Kings topping the charts with 16 dropped catches in the season so far. This could be associated to one of the reasons why CSK are teetering at the bottom of the IPL 2025 Points Table, and have already been eliminated from the Playoffs' race.

In this article, CricTracker takes a look at the three worst fielders in the season so far.

Matheesha Pathirana is more known for his bowling than his fielding. But he took a few spectacular catches last season. However, the Sri Lankan pacer has been guilty of dropping 4 catches in this edition thus far. He dropped Prabhsimran Singh in the match against the Punjab Kings. It was a straightforward chance at short third man, where he ran to his right and got his hands underneath the ball, but could not hold on to it.

Chennai Super Kings have the least catching efficiency of any team this season, with 63%. Hooda, Pathirana, Vijay Shankar, and Khaleel Ahmed have been the culprits on most occasions. With three drops, Matheesha Pathirana has been one of the worst fielders so far this season.
