India are coming off a dominant showing in Sri Lanka after sealing a 1-0 win in the two-match Test series away from home. September is considered an auspicious month in the Indian cricketing calendar, as it often marks the start of the Indian team's home season. The Men in Blue's dominance at home has stretched across formats, and they will be looking to get underway in dominant fashion in what would be a highly anticipated home season with important tours across formats.

With the lead-up to two important series next year in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia and the 2027 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, the team would be looking to get their combinations in order before the marquee tournament. There also exists the looming cloud of the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, where India will be entering as outright favourites.

How many matches will India play in September 2026?

The Indian team will be in action in six matches in September 2026. The team will play four T20I matches and two ODI matches in this span, with no red-ball action scheduled until late October's tour to New Zealand. The Shreyas Iyer-led T20I side will first play a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The Afghans will be considered the home side in the series, with the series being played in India due to security concerns in the country. The three games will be played on September 13, 15 and 17.

The T20I contingent will then head to Aichi Prefecture, where they will take part in the Asian Games. India have been seeded in the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they will take on the runners-up of Group A, comprising Afghanistan, Nepal and hosts Japan. The match will take place on September 28 at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin.

The ODI side, led by Shubman Gill, will take on the West Indies in a white-ball series comprising three ODIs and five T20Is. The first two ODIs will be played on September 27 and 30, at Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati, respectively. The ODI side will be without key names like Iyer, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah, who will be with the Asian Games contingent. Much excitement will also be present for the returns of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on home soil.
