India's selectors named a 15-member squad on September 16, 2026, for the five-match home T20I series against West Indies, with Shreyas Iyer leading the side and Tilak Varma serving as his deputy. Jasprit Bumrah, India's premier fast bowler, was a conspicuous absentee from the announcement. Bumrah's omission carries no injury concern. The reason account for his exclusion from this home assignmen are rooted in scheduling management decisions made by the BCCI and the selection committee.
The Asian Games 2026 cricket competition is being staged in Japan and runs from September 24 through to October 3, with the men's final scheduled on that closing date. Bumrah has been named in India's updated Asian Games squad alongside Iyer, Varma, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Vipraj Nigam and Yash Thakur.
IND vs WI 2026: 3 major changes in India's ODI squad
The T20I series against West Indies opens at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6, only three days after the Asian Games final. The BCCI identified this direct overlap as the primary reason Bumrah was not considered for the T20I assignment. Bumrah is committed to the Asian Games through October 3, the selectors opted to rest him from the West Indies series entirely rather than subject him to back-to-back international commitments within days of each other.
The pace department for the West Indies series has been reinforced with Mayank Yadav, who returns after missing the ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan, and Prince Yadav, who earns a place in the 15-member group. Kuldeep Yadav also comes back into the squad to strengthen the spin options. The five matches are scheduled across Lucknow on October 6, Ranchi on October 9, Indore on October 11, Hyderabad on October 14 and Bengaluru on October 17.
