IPL 2023: 3 teams that overspent on players in auction
A few franchises spent way too much at the IPL 2023 auction to add certain players to their arsenal.
The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction was done and dusted on December 23. A total of 405 players were featured at the marquee event but only 80 (29 overseas) of them were able to fetch IPL contracts.
The player auction witnessed many franchises breaking their bank to sign the top-drawer T20 stars. But teams were also wise enough to play the waiting game for a few acquisitions and grab cricketers at an affordable price. However, some of the teams spent way too much to add certain players to their arsenal.
Here are three teams who overspent on players at IPL 2023 auction:
3. Sunrisers Hyderabad - Harry Brook
Sunrisers Hyderabad went into the IPL 2023 auction with a staggering sum of INR 42.25 crore. However, they had many holes in the squad and needed to use the big purse wisely. The squad lacked top-drawer Indian batters and all-rounders and so, one would have expected the Hyderabad franchise to fill these voids.
Surprisingly, SRH went all guns blazing to pick Harry Brook and eventually paid a staggering sum of INR 13.25 crore to acquire his services. Though the England batter has demolished bowling attacks for fun in the international arena this calendar year, one might ponder whether he was worth the bucks he fetched.
Brook brings only one skill set to the table and does not much international experience, having played 24 matches for England across formats. Therefore, the Hyderabad franchise paying a hefty sum for the ace batter is questionable.
