'A privilege to watch' - Subrayen on Brevis after South Africa beat Zimbabwe in tri-series

South Africa recovered from a shock opening defeat to Namibia by beating Zimbabwe in their second tri-series fixture, with Dewald Brevis producing the innings that settled the contest. Brevis struck an unbeaten 75 off 32 balls, hitting seven boundaries and six sixes, to carry his side to victory against the Chevrons.

Brevis' knock saw the Proteas chase down a total of 144 after their loss to Namibia in their opener. The destructive batter also put on a valiant show against the hosts, scoring a 50-ball 75. Speaking of the knock, Protea off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen offered high praise to Brevis, noting his reluctance to take his side home after failing to do so against Namibia.

"I think Dewald's innings yesterday (against Namibia) and today (against Zimbabwe), he really showed frustration yesterday when he couldn't take us home. That's something he reflected on and he came today and saw it through for us. For us, sitting in the change room, it's uplifting watching him bat. Especially when you see the third umpire, running in the new ball every second over. Watching him bat is quite a privilege," Subrayen said, as quoted by ICC.

How did South Africa's bowling unit respond after the Namibia defeat?

South Africa's bowlers set the tone before Brevis took centre stage. Eathan Bosch returned 1 for 20 and Duan Jansen claimed 3 for 45, giving the side early control. Subrayen contributed a two-wicket haul of his own and praised both seamers for their efforts. Subrayen explained that the team had used the Namibia defeat as a prompt to examine their methods. He also drew on his domestic familiarity with Bosch and Jansen.

"I think it was a case of us reflecting in the dressing room, after the day's play. And also looking into ways we can be better, especially the small areas. And the bowling unit came out today, and we were really fired up. I was lucky there to be with Eathan as the Dolphins, and with Duan at JSK (in SA20). Knowing them as people, and as cricketers, I know what they bring to the table. I don't think it was a mindset thing. Working with the captain, and the way he leads the team, he takes a lot of the load off your shoulders. His ability to think the game, and read the game, definitely helps you as a bowler and helps you think about every single ball," Subrayen said.

What did Subrayen say about the Windhoek venue and what comes next in the tri-series?

Subrayen reserved particular praise for the Namibia Cricket Ground at Windhoek, where he had gathered a combined tally of wickets across both matches in the tri-series. The ground is confirmed as one of the venues for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. The next match of the series will see Namibia take on Zimbabwe on Monday, August 31.

"The conditions offered a little bit of everything to everyone. I enjoyed the conditions. Fast bowlers, spinners, as well as batters. I think we had a little bit of an upper hand, having played on it yesterday, so we knew what the wicket was going to do. And I think it played quite well. So definitely credit to both sides on how they maximise their efforts," Subrayen said.
