Afghanistan T20I series dates uncertain as India's Bangladesh tour gains momentum

India will play three T20Is against Afghanistan in New Delhi on September 13, 15 and 17, but the timing creates a tight window with India's Bangladesh tour, which features three ODIs on September 1, 3 and 6, followed by three T20Is on September 9, 12 and 13. The Bangladesh leg stretches nearly two weeks, and if India returns late or requires turnaround time, scheduling the Afghan series could become logistically complex.

Although Afghanistan have played several home series in India over the years because of the lack of international cricket facilities in their own country, this will be the first time they will host India on Indian soil. Previously, Afghanistan have used venues like Dehradun, Greater Noida and Lucknow as their home grounds. The BCCI facilitated an understanding between the Afghanistan Cricket Board and the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for Delhi to serve as the home base for Afghanistan during the series, with the DDCA scheduling its Delhi Premier League T20 accordingly.

The Bangladesh tour will feature six white-ball matches across the first half of September. Relations between India and Bangladesh had deteriorated sharply in 2024 following Sheikh Hasina's ouster from office, but Tarique Rahman assumed office as Prime Minister on 17 February 2026, triggering a recalibration of bilateral ties. Since Rahman's victory in February's general election, India and Bangladesh have sought a calibrated approach to stabilising relations.

Due to political tensions, Bangladesh withdrew from the 2026 T20 World Cup. As a result, Scotland was named as their replacement and went on to represent the tournament.

Why is Afghanistan's homeseries in India so significant?

This marks the first instance of Afghanistan hosting India within their own borders, breaking a historical pattern of playing home matches in India or the UAE due to security constraints. The series itinerary has been shared with India's national selection committee since it has to pick a 15-member T20 squad for the Asian Games, which are scheduled to begin on September 23. The Asian Games give selectors a narrow window between the end of the Bangladesh leg on September 13 and the start of the Afghanistan series on September 13, leaving no buffer.

India's Test tour of Sri Lanka runs from August 15 to 27, 2026, providing a two-week gap before white-ball commitments begin. However, the West Indies tour starts on September 27, 2026, compressing the entire international calendar for the Indian team. The BCCI and Afghanistan Cricket Board have reached an understanding, but formal confirmations remain pending. If dates shift, cascading complications could ripple across all three bilateral assignments.
