The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction could throw in several surprises as a few franchise icons could be set to shift bases. A lot of the limelight is on Rohit Sharma, whose future at Mumbai Indians (MI) remains uncertain.

While there is no confirmation on whether the five-time IPL-winning franchise will release Rohit, experts and fans have been discussing the possibilities. Ahead of IPL 2024, MI named Hardik Pandya as their captain, replacing Rohit, who had led the franchise to five titles. This move was met with immense criticism from the fans. Reports also emerged suggesting that the Indian captain was not happy with how the team was operating.

As the mega auction is expected to take place ahead of IPL 2025, speculations of Rohit leaving Mumbai have engulfed the cricket fraternity. However, Ravichandran Ashwin believes that the legendary Mumbai batter will continue his stay at MI.

"Even if you think like Rohit, it's not wrong at all. 'I don't want any headache. I have been a captain for India. I have captained Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it's super'. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn't matter for some of those players. That's the thing," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

How did Rohit and MI fare in IPL 2024?

Rohit had his fifth-most productive run-scoring season in his illustrious IPL career. The right-handed batter scored 417 runs, the most in an IPL season since 2016. He scored a century and fifty, with the best score of 105*. He averaged 32.08 and had a stellat strike rate of 150 in the season.

While Rohit's numbers were impressive in IPL 2024, MI had a forgettable campaign under Pandya's leadership as they finished last on the points table, only managing four wins out of 14 games. The MI management is known for its never-ending drive for success. They will leave no stone unturned in their quest to build a formidable team in IPL 2025. However, whether Rohit will be part of their redemption story is still unclear.
