Middlesex have signed Ali Orr from Hampshire on a three-year contract. The 25-year-old batter, once considered a prospect for Test cricket, moves to his third county after departing Sussex three years earlier following a disagreement with the club's director of cricket, Paul Farbrace. Orr joined Hampshire in 2024 and has now secured a fresh opportunity with the north London club.
Orr's time at Hampshire produced mixed results in the longer format. In 15 County Championship matches, he averaged 23.48 with the bat. However, he demonstrated considerably greater promise in the One-Day Cup, where he proved prolific and scored three centuries during the 2025 Metro Bank One Day Cup, including a three-figure score in the final at Trent Bridge against Worcestershire. This contrast between his red-ball and white-ball form highlighted his potential across different formats.
Orr expressed his optimism about the move in a statement released by Middlesex.
"I'm really excited to be joining Middlesex, a club moving in a positive direction with some extremely talented young players. This is a fresh start for me, and I'm looking forward to competing across all three formats, consistently making a difference in the side," Orr was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.
The batter's move to Middlesex represents an opportunity to rebuild his career after a challenging period at Hampshire. Orr's departure from Sussex three years earlier had followed a clash with the club's director of cricket, and his subsequent stint at Hampshire had not yielded the consistent performances expected of a player once tipped as a future Test opener. Middlesex's recent trajectory and squad development appear to have attracted him to the club.

Fulton's vision for Orr's development
Middlesex head coach Peter Fulton welcomed the signing and outlined his expectations for the batter's development at the club. Fulton recognised Orr's talent and the potential for improvement under new management and a different environment.
The coach expressed confidence that a change of surroundings could help restore the batter's form in the Championship.
"I am thrilled to sign Orr. He is a highly talented player who has already proved he can be successful at this level of cricket. We see some real upside to his game and think that a fresh start at Middlesex can help him get back to scoring big runs and providing more competition for places in our top order," Fulton said.
