As the third Test of the Ashes 2023 finally got underway, England won the toss and opted to bowl first. Looking to claw their way back into the series, the decision seemed to have worked in skipper Ben Stokes’ favour, as England put in a magnificent performance with the ball.
The English pace attack dismantled Australia’s batting lineup, as only Mitchell Marsh’s knock was able to stabilise the innings for the visitors. However, England were hit with a massive roadblock as pacer Ollie Robinson injured himself during the first innings.
It was after the second ball of the 43rd over that Robinson had to leave the field, as Stuart Broad replaced him on the field. The pacer also had ankle issues before the series, and his problems continued as it was confirmed that Robinson sustained a muscle spasm in his back and that he would be sitting out for the rest of the day.
Ollie Robinson was recently subjected to major controversies as well after he verbally abused Aussie opener Usman Khawaja after dismissing him in the first Ashes Test. His verbal altercation with Khawaja captured major headlines, as many former and current stars gave their takes on the matter as well.
Australia got bundled out for 263 in the first innings
Coming out to bat, Pat Cummins-led Australia looked to notch up a big total on the board in the first innings of the third Ashes Test. However, the English pacers had a different plan in mind. The top order of Australia toppled under England’s relentless bowling attack.
David Warner was sent packing for four runs, Khawaja only scored 13 runs, Marnus Labuschagne was sent back for 21 runs, and Steve Smith only managed to score 22 runs before he was sent back to the pavilion. Mitchell Marsh scored 118 runs in just as many deliveries and helped Australia post 263 runs on the board in the first innings. As England come out to bat, they will look to gather a significant lead against their arch-rivals.
