Ashes 2023: Pat Cummins' consistency and Jonny Baistow's lapse in concentration puts England on the backfoot at Headingley

The Day 2 of the third Ashes Test at Headingley, Leeds, has been an enthralling affair so far, as Australia have been all over England in the first session. England resumed their innings at 68/3 in 19 overs with Joe Root (19*) and Jonny Bairstow (1*) at the crease. Australian captain Pat Cummins started the proceedings for his side and struck immediately as he dismissed Joe Root on the second ball of the day.

Cummins bowled a short of a length delivery which came to Root at an awkward height, and he ended up edging it straight to David Warner at first slip. Following his dismissal, Jonny Bairstow scored some boundaries and kept the scoreboard moving. 

However, his onslaught could not last long as he ended up chasing a wide one from Mitchell Starc and edged it to Steven Smith at second slip. Bairstow left England reeling at 87/5 with captain Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali at the crease. 

Earlier on Day 1, Cummins got the first strike for his team as he made Ben Duckett edge one to wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Following that, he dismissed the dangerous Harry Brook by getting him out caught at slip. Earlier, Australia were bundled out for 263 in their first innings. 

After being put into bat first, England seamers were all over them from the first over itself as Stuart Broad dismissed opener David Warner for the 16^th time in his career. The Kangaroos were further reduced to 85/4 with Usman Khawaja (13), Marnus Labuschagne (21) and Steven Smith (22) back in the hut.

However, their innings was rescued by a breathtaking hundred by Mitchell Marsh, who scored a run-a-ball 118, smashing 17 fours and four sixes in his innings. From England, Mark Wood dazzled with the ball and picked up a brilliant fifer on his return. The speedster registered figures of 5/34 in 11.4 overs, while Chris Woakes (3/73 in 17 overs) and Stuart Broad (2/58) were also among the wickets.
