In a strategic move ahead of the third Test against India in Rajkot, England have opted to bring in Mark Wood who will be replacing Shoaib Bashir in the playing XI. This decision comes as England seek to regain their lead in the five-match Test series after India levelled it in the previous encounter in Visakhapatnam.

Shoaib Bashir, the 20-year-old, faced visa issues that delayed his entry into the squad, finally making his debut in the second Test, where England faced a defeat. In a bid to strengthen their pace attack, Mark Wood has been recalled, despite not claiming any wickets in Hyderabad. Stokes opened up about the importance of adapting to the conditions, especially considering the nature of the pitch in Rajkot, which favours batting.

Ben Stokes explains reason for replacing Shoaib Bashir

Stokes, set to play his 100th Test match for England, explained the reason behind the decision.

"Taking a bit of knowledge from the last Test match we played here, albeit a long time ago, it was a pretty true, flat wicket. He further elaborated that including an extra seamer like Wood would give the team the best chance of success on what seems to be a favourable wicket for batting" the England skipper was quoted as saying by Metro.co.uk.

"Looking at it today, it looks a bit platey but I think it’s a good wicket. Bringing in an extra seamer this week is the option we’ve gone with because we think it’s going to give us the best chance of winning this week," he added.

James Anderson retained his place after an impressive performance in the previous match. England's bowling attack will aim to give the Indian batting lineup a tough time on a flat Rajkot surface.

Still recovering from knee surgery, Stokes also promised his physio that he would not take up the ball.

"It’s little and often now. We don’t have a plan for where I go with my intensity. It’s just how I feel at the time, but also not getting too far ahead. It was another step forward. But I’ve pinky promised my physio I won’t be loosening up to bowl even if everything is feeling well. That would just be a risk that’s not worth it," he concluded.
