Billy Stanlake emerges as Test contender for Australia amid busy schedule ahead

Chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that Australia's selection panel holds genuine interest in fast bowler Billy Stanlake as a potential Test option, with the team set to navigate one of its most demanding schedules in recent memory over the next 12 months.

Stanlake's return to international cricket came on the ODI tour of Pakistan, where he played his first match at that level in over seven years, appearing in Rawalpindi towards the end of May. He has since earned selection for Australia's upcoming white-ball assignments in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Bailey was direct when addressing the Test question, acknowledging both the bowler's prolonged absence from four-day cricket and the attributes that keep him on the selectors' radar. The peak of Stanlake's first-class activity in any single season stands at four appearances, achieved in 2019-20, and Bailey made clear that any pathway to Test cricket would be handled with care rather than urgency.

"[We are] not rushing at it and understanding that he's missed a large chunk of it [red-ball cricket] over a period of time. But there's some fundamentals in the way he goes about it and the skillset that I think at its best could certainly have a place at the Test level. So, that's something that we will look to explore in the near future." Bailey was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.

"Billy really impressed in the most recent tour that he went on to Pakistan. We're certainly interested, yeah, absolutely," Bailey said further.

What do Stanlake's record and Australia's schedule mean for a possible Test call-up?

Stanlake's first-class statistics, while based on a small sample, offer a reasonable foundation. Across three Sheffield Shield outings for Tasmania last summer he claimed nine wickets at an average of 26.88, and his overall first-class record stands at 40 wickets at 26.92.

His height and capacity to generate high pace have consistently made him an appealing option when fit, particularly in white-ball cricket. He made his international debut in 2017, and a T20I against Zimbabwe in 2018 produced figures of 4-0-8-4, one of the more striking performances of his brief international career.
