Cricketers’ wives share insights on difficulties they encounter that 'look glamourous'

Puja Pabari Pujara, wife of Cheteshwar Pujara, and Priyanka Chaudhary Raina, wife of cricketer Suresh Raina, recently shared their challenges and how they support their family through tumultuous situations.

India is a country which sees cricket as a religion and the cricketers as demigods. However, from the outside, it may seem that the athletes and their families have no problems whatsoever in their lives, living amidst all the glitz and glamour, the reality is far from it. The better halves of the cricketers also have to face stiff challenges on a day-to-day basis as they have to stand as an anchor for their families to allow their partners to focus on their performances.

Puja, a mother, manager, and homemaker, said the media has portrayed a glamorous image of the wives which not correct.

“People think we just travel and live the best life. But little do they know that cricketers live a very disciplined life and the family has to follow. It just looks glamourous on the outside but inside, there are challenges, sweat and everything in between," Pujara said in the second edition of News18 SheShakti in New Delhi.

Priyanka, who is also the co-founder of Maate, noted that social media was responsible for the bright picture painted of the players’ lives. She said that their family lives are also filled with struggles and challenges like others.

“Our common objective is making a home full of love, discipline, and the right environment for our children. While we sacrifice at times by putting our issues on the backburner, they sacrifice too by travelling for months, not being able to see their children which takes a toll on them," Priyanka said.

Priyanka mentioned that it is crucial for the wives to create an environment around the cricketers which can help them stay relaxed, both mentally and emotionally.
