CWC 2023: Marnus Labuschagne survives run out after obstructing the field during AUS vs NZ clash

Australia and New Zealand are locking horns in Match 27 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Saturday, October 28 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. After being put in to bat first, Australia posted a massive score of 388 all out in 49.2 overs. During their innings, Marnus Labuschagne obstructed the field while trying to save himself in the 38^th over of the innings.

On the second ball of the over bowled by Trent Boult, the Australian batter cut him towards point and looked for a single. However, there was some miscommunication between him and Glenn Maxwell who had second thoughts about running. As a result, Labuschagne was in trouble at the non-striker’s end as wicketkeeper Tom Latham had a shy at the stumps.

The throw was off target and the Australian batter had put in the dive to save himself. However, the replays showed that Labuschagne had changed his line of running which could’ve declared him out under obstructing the field but New Zealand didn’t appeal for the dismissal and Labuschagne continued his innings.

However, Labuschagne couldn’t make the most of his reprieve as he got dismissed for 18 (26) while trying to sweep Mitchell Santer but got caught in the deep. Earlier in the innings, Australia got off to an electrifying start as openers David Warner and Travis Head got involved in a massive 175-run stand off 115 balls.

Warner continued his sensational form and missed out on his third consecutive hundred in the tournament as he got dismissed for 81 (65). On the other hand, Head scored a scintillating hundred on his comeback to the Australian team post his injury.

Glenn Phillips starred with the ball for New Zealand

He also registered the fastest hundred on his World Cup debut reaching the landmark in just 59 balls and scored 109 (67) smashing ten fours and seven sixes in his innings. Following his dismissal, contributions from Josh Inglis (38 off 28) and Pat Cummins (37 off 14) propelled Australia’s total to 388 in the death overs. Glenn Phillips was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand as he picked up 3/37 in ten overs while Trent Boult (3/77) also picked up three wickets in his ten-over spell.
