CWC 2023: Rohit Sharma hits most sixes in a calendar year in ODIs, surpasses AB de Villiers

India captain Rohit Sharma continued his record-breaking spree in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as he registered the most number of sixes by a batter in ODIs in a calendar year. The 36-year-old achieved the feat during Match 45 of the tournament against Netherlands on Sunday, November 12 at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

The opening batter achieved the milestone during the seventh over of the innings as he hit Colin Ackermann for a six straight down the ground. With his shot, Sharma left behind legendary South Africa batter AB de Villiers who had smacked 58 sixes in 2015.

Furthermore the Indian skipper now also has the most number of sixes by a captain in a single edition of the ODI World Cup (24). He left behind former England captain Eoin Morgan who hit 22 sixes in the 2019 edition of the tournament. Rohit has smacked 60 sixes in 2023 in ODIs so far from 24 innings and has scored 1161 runs at an average of 52.77 and a strike rate of 114.72. The Indian opener has registered two hundreds and nine fifties in the year so far.

In the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, he has amassed 503 runs from nine innings at an average of 55.88 and a strike rate of 121.49 with one hundred and three fifties to his name.

Rohit and Gill added 100 runs for the first wicket

The Nagpur-born batter scored his 13th 50+ score of the ODI World Cup against Netherlands playing a brilliant innings of 61 (54) smashing eight fours and two sixes. He got involved in a massive 100-run stand for the first wicket with Shubman Gill who also scored a half-century (51 off 32). However, the opening duo failed to convert their fifties into a big innings and were dismissed shortly after reaching their respective landmarks leaving India on 129/2 after 17.4 overs.
