Did India ever lose to an associate team at the T20 World Cup?
India have lifted the T20 World Cup twice in history, once in 2007 and again in 2024.
India are one of the most successful teams in the history of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, having lifted the trophy twice, first in the inaugural edition in 2007 and then again in 2024. The 10th edition of the tournament is currently underway from February 7 to March 8, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
India have been placed in Group A, alongside Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the United States of America. The Men in Blue enter the tournament as defending champions, having won the 2024 T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa in the final, which was co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. A title win this time would make India three-time T20 World Cup champions, further cementing their dominance in the shortest format.
Has India ever lost to an associate team in T20 World Cup history?
Major ICC tournaments are generally dominated by full-member nations, but associate teams have often produced memorable upsets. Over the years, teams such as the USA, Namibia, and the Netherlands have stunned established sides. In the 2024 edition, the USA defeated Pakistan in their maiden appearance, Namibia beat Sri Lanka in 2022, and the Netherlands famously knocked out England in 2009.
However, India have never lost to an associate nation in T20 World Cup history. They have faced teams such as Afghanistan, Scotland, the USA, the Netherlands, and Namibia across various editions, maintaining a perfect record against associate sides.
That said, India did come close to suffering their first such defeat during the 2026 edition, when they struggled against the USA. The Indian batting lineup faltered early, but a crucial captain’s knock from Suryakumar Yadav helped stabilise the innings and guide India to safety. Without that effort, the Men in Blue might have endured their first-ever T20 World Cup loss to an associate team.
In the ongoing tournament, India are yet to face Namibia and the Netherlands. While upsets are always possible in T20 cricket, India’s strong form, depth, and the advantage of playing at home mean they are well placed to extend their unbeaten run against associate teams.
