'Disappointed with this outcome' - Cricket Australia responds after David Warner withdraws leadership ban review

Soon after David Warner announced his decision to withdraw his application regarding Australia's captaincy ban review, the cricket board of the country shared their response stating their disappointment about Warner’s move.

The southpaw took to social media on Wednesday to declare his decision and also called out the panel for wanting to have a public hearing instead of a private one. The Aussie opener also revealed that he doesn’t want his family to go through any other trauma as they have already gone through a lot since the infamous Sandpapergate incident in 2018.

“Regrettably, I have no practical alternative at this point in time but to withdraw my application. I am not prepared to subject my family or my teammates to further trauma and disruption by accepting a departure from the way in which my application should be dealt with pursuant to the Code of Conduct. Some things are more important than cricket,” posted the cricketer on his social media handle.

Cricket Australia didn’t take much time to respond as the board explained that their intention "was to give David the opportunity to demonstrate why his lifetime leadership ban should be varied at an independent hearing".

The 36-year-old was even closer to becoming the next ODI captain of the Kangaroos but to everyone’s surprise, Test captain Pat Cummins was chosen ahead of him.

In the statement, the governing body mentioned that they support and respect Warner’s decision.

“We are disappointed with this outcome as our intention was to give David the opportunity to demonstrate why his lifetime leadership ban should be varied at an independent hearing and we amended our Code of Conduct accordingly. We supported David’s wish for these discussions to be heard behind closed doors and respect his decision to withdraw his application,” the statement read.

“David is a very senior and highly regarded member of the Australian team who has been a great ambassador for the game as a whole since his return from a year-long ban,” it added.
