‘Dravid, Ponting, Fleming, and McCullum’ - Eoin Morgan recommends four names for England white-ball coaching

After failing to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 finals, ECB decided to part ways with white-ball head coach Matthew Mott. Marcus Trescothick has been named as the interim coach but the management is eager to find a permanent solution, keeping the Champions Trophy in mind. Former cricketer Freddie Flintoff was linked with the job for a long time but ECB are yet to finalise anything.

2019 World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan was one of the candidates that was heavily speculated on social media. However, the 37-year-old distanced himself from the role, stating that the time was not right. Morgan however named four former cricketers who should be considered for the role.

Rahul Dravid, who recently guided India to T20 World Cup success was Morgan’s first recommendation, which was followed by the names of Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum. Ponting recently parted ways with Delhi Capitals but brought success to Washington Freedom in the MLC while Fleming is part of the Super Kings franchise and McCullum is currently the coach of the England red-ball team.

“You got to remember, it's the England cricket team, it's one of the most resourced cricket teams in the world, so it is up to Rob (Key) to make that role as attractive as possible. So you then go to the best coaches or highly regarded coaches in the world and say 'Well, this is a job that you want to do as opposed to having to second guess it,” Morgan told Sky Sports.

“In my eyes, at the moment, you would go to Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming, and Brendon McCullum. I say McCullum because I believe he is one of the best coaches in the world,” he added.

Meanwhile, captain Jos Buttler too is in a fragile spot. There are talks of him being removed from white-ball captaincy but more will come to light in England’s upcoming white-ball series against Australia, scheduled to begin on September 11.
