England announce squad for ODI series vs Australia, Harry Brook named captain

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced the squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Australia, slated to begin on September 19 in Trent Bridge. Captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the series owing to a calf injury and in his absence, Harry Brook will be leading the team.
Pacer Josh Hull, who recently earned his debut call in the England set-up has also been ruled out with a quad injury. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone, who was adjudged the Player of the Match for the second T20I against Australia has been named in the squad for the five-match series.
Meanwhile, keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow has been overlooked for the series. England are focusing on building a squad for the squad for future and keeping that in mind, Moeen Ali and Bairstow were omitted from the squad. Moeen since then went on to retire from international cricket while Bairstow is eyeing for a comeback.

Apart from Moeen and Bairstow, several other noteworthy cricketers are also missing from the Australia series. Chris Woakes was not considered for selection while Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood have been ruled out due to thigh and elbow injury respectively.
This will also be the first time when Brook will lead the national team. He led the U19 England team in 2018 and was named the Yorkshire deputy for four matches in the T20 Blast in 2022. Recently, he was made the captain of the Northern Superchargers and under his leadership, the team won five out of six matches but narrowly missed out on the knockout stage.
He was also named Ollie Pope’s deputy in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, which Ben Stokes missed due to a hamstring injury.
