After an emphatic start to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with a nine-wicket win by New Zealand over England, the action continued in the cricketing carnival as Pakistan locked horns with the Netherlands in the second game. The two teams faced off in the second game of the tournament on Friday, October 06 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards won the toss and elected to bowl first under hot conditions in Hyderabad. In another surprising move, the Edwards opened the bowling with off-spinner Aryan Dutt. The 20-year-old repaid his captain’s trust as he didn’t leak runs from his end and mounted the pressure on Pakistan's openers.

The move immediately worked as opener Fakhar Zaman (12 off 15) ended up getting dismissed in just the fourth over of the innings by Logan van Beek who caught him off his own bowling. Pakistan captain Babar Azam walked in next and looked troubled by Aryan Dutt who had dismissed him twice in the past.

The world’s number one ODI batter failed to rotate the strike and couldn’t get his innings going. His struggle finally ended in the ninth over as he ended up pulling Colin Ackerman straight to Saqib Zulfiqar at short mid-wicket. As a result, Babar departed after scoring 5 off 18 balls and leaving Pakistan reeling at 34/2 after 8.3 overs.

There was more joy for the Netherlands in the very next over as Imam-ul-Haq ended up pulling Paul van Meekeren straight to Aryan Dutt at fine leg. The Pakistan opener departed after scoring 15 (19) leaving his side in all sorts of trouble at 38/3 after 9.1 overs.

After 18 overs, Pakistan were 90/3 with Mohammad Rizwan (30* off 35) and Saud Shakeel (25* off 20) at the crease. Logan van Beek, Colin Ackerman and Paul van Meekeren were among the wickets for the Netherlands.
