Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has said that Pakistan cannot even think of fielding more than one team like their arch-rivals India do. Giving further clarification on the same, Akmal blatantly said that the Men in Green do not even have one complete team in the first place.
Over the last couple of years, Team India have been fielding 2-3 teams at once with the aim of giving chances to some of the finest talents on the bench and also resting senior players at same time. Meanwhile, the experimentations continued in T20Is throughout last year as an audition to finalize the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup.
However, the national selectors and the team management were heavily criticized for this tactic after India’s ouster from the T20 World Cup semis with a humiliating 10-wicket loss at the hands of the eventual champions England.
You could've made 2-3 teams before 2018-19: Kamran Akmal
When a reporter had asked Kamran Akmal whether Pakistan can field two sides, he instantly replied that the national team could have easily made 2-3 teams before the 2018-19 season.
“Pehle aap ek toh poori kar lein (Firstly, you need to complete your first team),” during an interview with paktv.tv.
"You could've made 2-3 teams before 2018-19. Your domestic cricket was there. Department cricket was so rich in Pakistan. I know this because I've played there for years. Since we topped it, making even one team is difficult,” he added.
“If having six teams was so beneficial, Fawad Alam wouldn't have made a comeback after so many years,” the ex-stumper further added.
While Pakistan were one of the formidable sides in T20Is in the year gone by reaching the finals of the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup, they were really poor in red-ball cricket losing successive home series against Australia and England.
The humiliating 0-3 whitewash against the Ben Stokes-led side exposed the weaknesses of the pace department in the absence of fast bowling spearhead Shaheen Afridi who still remains out of action due to a knee injury.
While Pakistan succeeded in managing a hard-fought draw in the two-match Test series against New Zealand, their batting failed to click as a unit in the second and third One Day Internationals as a result of which the Men in Green ended up conceding the series 1-2 from a dominant position.
