In a major boost to sports infrastructure in Eastern India, Kolkata has announced a state-of-the-art sports facility mirroring the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Spearheaded by former India cricketer Sandeep Patil, this ambitious project aims to revolutionize sports training and rehabilitation in the region.

The facility is set to become a foundation for multiple sports, including cricket, tennis, football, and basketball. Located at the Athlead International School in Joka, it promises to be a game-changer for Eastern India and North-East athletes.

Patil, a former NCA director and a chairman of selectors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has been appointed as the head of this venture on a five-year contract. The former opened up about his involvement.

"When they (Shrachi Sports Ventures) approached me, I took time to say 'yes'. I really liked what they are going to offer to Indian cricket. That's how I've agreed," Patil said as quoted by India Today.

Coaches and facility will cater to all their needs: Sandeep Pati

The 67-year-old has brought in his trusted team from NCA, including Dinesh Nanavati, Gautam Shome, and sports therapist Ashish Kaushik.

This experienced group will form the core of the facility's operations, ensuring top-notch training and rehabilitation services. One of the primary objectives of this facility is to provide comprehensive support to cricketers from the region.

"Those who were at NCA with me Nanavati, Ashish, Shome, I've brought all of them here. It's a team that will work here. From now on, no cricketer will have to go outside for any rehab or any fitness issues, the coaches and facility will cater to all their needs," Patil added.

Rahul Todi, managing director of the Shrachi Group, revealed plans for a football academy to be headed by former India goalkeeper Bhaskar Ganguly. Tennis legend Leander Paes is also set to oversee the tennis program, due to the facility's multi-sport focus.

Patil has decided to relocate to the city of joy to be fully committed to the program and put all his expertise into the betterment of the sport in that region.

"I've not come here to conduct or supervise the course. I've come here for five years staying in Kolkata. I don't think I can do this while staying in Mumbai — I've never done this in my life. When I was a coach of Kenya, Oman, or Madhya Pradesh, I made sure I stayed there fully," Patil concluded.
