Fortuin calls for tighter fielding as Proteas eye T20 tri-series final

South Africa captain Bjorn Fortuin has called for improved fielding standards as the Proteas prepare for their final group match against Namibia on September 4, with a place in the T20I Tri-Series final on September 6 at stake.

South Africa defeated Zimbabwe by 43 runs in their second group match of the 2026 Namibia T20I Tri-Nation Series, which runs from August 28 to September 6 in Namibia. The result moved them closer to the final, but Fortuin was candid about areas that need attention. The Proteas had fallen short against Namibia in their opening match of the series, making the win over Zimbabwe an important response and the upcoming clash against the hosts a critical fixture.

"Happy with the performance. Obviously, with the standards we set for ourselves, there are some areas we would like to tidy up. We were a bit loose with the ball at the end, and with the bat we wanted more, but I've learned not to take any wins for granted," Fortuin said after their win against Zimbabwe, as quoted by IOL.

Lhuan-Dre Pretorius was the standout with the bat, scoring 94 runs off 51 balls. Dewald Brevis contributed 41 runs in the same match, providing solid support in the middle order. Their contributions took the Proteas side to a total of 185 for 7 in their 20 overs, after having elected to bat first.

Zimbabwe were bowled out for 142, with Fortuin leading from the front, taking 4/24 in three overs and four deliveries. Duan Jansen also made a significant contribution as well, claiming 3/21.

We never really strive for individual performances — we are looking for wins, but to contribute like that was quite cool. Obviously, we want to go into the business end of the series with some confidence, and getting a good performance against Namibia will do that," Fortuin said.
