Glenn Maxwell last appeared for Australia in Test cricket back in 2017. But since then, the big hitter has only been restricted to white-ball appearances. Cricket Australia recently unveiled the squad for the white-ball tour to the United Kingdom, with series against England and Scotland. Australia have an important Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India waiting in December-January and the red-ball tour to Sri Lanka in 2025 will potentially see Maxwell in whites.

The two-match Test series will be part of Australia’s World Test Champions 2023-25 cycle and according to reports from Sydney Morning Herald, Maxwell might find a place in the playing XI owing to Australia’s aggressive approach while playing in the subcontinent. The last time when Aussies toured Asia for six month long stay, they lost to India 0-1, won against Pakistan 1-0, and levelled the series against Sri Lanka by 1-1.

"We prioritise every Test, we’ll take that across the summer and see how the five Tests against India go and then we’ll make those decisions post that as to exactly how everyone’s travelling,” selection chair George Bailey said.

“What we do know about Sri Lanka is that potentially the surfaces there do give you a bit of a different make-up of your Test side so it doesn’t tend to look exactly the same as what the Test team over the Australian summer might look like," he added

They still have me in their thoughts and see me as an option: Glenn Maxwell

Maxwell has had bad luck running after him when it comes to Test appearance. He was called up for the Sri Lanka tour in 2022 but was not included in the playing XI. Moreover, he was in consideration for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in India and had to cede due to a horrible accident that caused him a leg injury. He had previously expressed his desire to feature in the 2025 Sri Lanka tour back in November 2023.

“Just the fact I was able to be on the Sri Lanka tour last year is a sign they still have me in their thoughts and see me as an option. Regardless of whether I played one or 30 games in red-ball cricket, I’m still going to be an option to go over there," Maxwell said in November 2023.
