Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell made a stunning comeback to competitive cricket, smashing a half-century in his first fixture since suffering a fracture to his leg at a friend's party in November 2022.

The white-ball specialist, who missed three months of cricket due to the injury, played for his club outfit Fitzroy-Doncaster in the Victorian Premier Cricket fixture on the weekend, scoring 61 runs off 92 balls.

The explosive batter helped his side pick up a thrilling two-wicket win after they were reduced to 3/18 in their run chase of 215 runs against Kingston Hawthorn.

“To bring a player of Glenn’s calibre into the squad is exciting, he has a fantastic record in Shield cricket and it’s a shame he hasn’t been able to play more of it," said David Hussey, Cricket Victoria’s head of male cricket on Saturday as quoted by News18.

Maxwell's return to form has put him in contention for selection for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India in March. "If Maxwell can prove his fitness, then he might be considered for the upcoming 3 ODIs against India next month," reported cricket.com.au.

Maxwell's injury prevented him from playing in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Australia is facing India in a four-match Test series. However, his return to form and fitness may see him make a return to international cricket soon.

Bowling fitness still being assessed

Maxwell's return to the field was crucial in helping his side clinch a win in the Victorian Premier Cricket fixture, as he helped to stabilise the innings with his crucial knock. He hit two sixes and five boundaries during his innings.

However, the all-rounder did not bowl in the match, and his bowling fitness is still being assessed ahead of the Marsh Sheffield Shield match for Victoria against South Australia on Monday.

The 34-year-old's comeback has been eagerly awaited by fans and cricket enthusiasts alike, with many hoping to see the flamboyant all-rounder return to his explosive best. With the ODI series against India just around the corner, the Australian team will be hoping that Maxwell's impressive form with the bat continues and that he can provide the much-needed firepower in the middle order.
