Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently shared an unheard story about legendary cricketer MS Dhoni's recognition.

Ashwin, who played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2008 to 2015, took 90 wickets in 97 matches across eight seasons. His stellar performance in the 2011 IPL season, where he claimed 20 wickets and became the fourth-highest wicket-taker, played a pivotal role in CSK's second title victory.

At a launch event for his new book 'I Have the Streets - A Kutti Cricket Story', Ashwin revealed that MS Dhoni was unaware of his existence in 2008. The turning point came during the Challenger Trophy in Nagpur, where Ashwin bowled an exceptional spell against Dhoni.

"MS Dhoni didn't even know someone like me existed in 2008. So, I made it my life goal, from 2009, to get the wicket of MS Dhoni. I bowled an unbelievable spell in the Challenger Trophy in Nagpur. MS struggled throughout the spell. Once, when he tried to play, the ball went through the gates. I got him out in the final. From then on, MS Dhoni saw me as someone with skill, and the relationship matured," Ashwin said.

Ashwin's determination paid off, as he transformed from playing just two games in IPL 2009 to becoming a key player in CSK's lineup from 2010 onwards. He played a crucial role in helping the franchise secure their first IPL title that year. The spinner also provided insight into Dhoni's leadership style.

"If MS decides a horse is not ready to race, he won't use you. He needs to know you're a horse. But once he knows you're a horse, he will look past you only when you feel like giving up. That is MS Dhoni. He believes in you," added Ashwin.

After representing CSK for eight seasons, Ashwin went on to play for other franchises including, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, becoming one of the most respected bowlers in the world.

Recently the 37-year-old joined India Cements taking charge of CSK's new High-Performance Center coming up on the outskirts of Chennai. The new development has sparked discussions about the spinner's potential return to the Chennai-based franchise after a decade with a mega auction coming up before IPL 2025.
