India won the second ODI match against South Africa to level the three-match series to 1-1 on Sunday, October 9. South African batters put a big 278/7 total while batting first after brilliant fifties from Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram. But in response, Indian middle-order batters proved too strong for the South African bowlers and easily chased the target with seven wickets and 25 balls remaining.
The stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj won the toss and decided to bat first with three changes to their squad. India also moved out Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravi Bishnoi and roped in Washington Sundar and debutant Shahbaz Ahmed. Mohammed Siraj bowled out in-from Quinton de Kock in the third over to give India a flying start. Shahbaz dismissed Janneman Malan in the tenth over and South Africa were struggling at 40/2.
Then middle-order batters Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram put a big 129-run partnership for the third wicket to keep South Africa on track for a big total again. Reeza scored 74 runs off 76 balls before getting out on Siraj's delivery in the 32nd over. Markram and David Miller then formed another crucial partnership but Indian bowlers made an impressive comeback in the last fifteen overs to restrict South Africa to 278/7. For India, Siraj took the three wickets for 38 but Avesh Khan struggled for wickets again.
Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan shine in India's big win:
While chasing a challenging target, India lost their captain Shikhar Dhawan on just 13 runs in the sixth over. Shubman Gill looked confident for a big knock after smashing five eye-catching fours but was dismissed by Rabada in the ninth over.
Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer then dominated the middle overs with controlled gameplay but kept the runs coming with some big shots as well. Both the batters formed a 161-run partnership for the third wicket to ensure India's win. Fortuin removed Ishan on 93 runs to rekindle visitors' hope in the 35th over.
But Shreyas continued the good start and formed an unbeaten 73-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Sanju Samson. He smashed his second ODI hundred and remained unbeaten 113 runs off 111 balls with the help of 15 fours. Samson scored 30 runs off 36 balls and guided India to a big seven-wicket win with 25 balls remaining. For South Africa, Fortuin, Rabada, and Parnell took one wicket each.
With this win, India jump to the fifth position in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-22/23 table with 119 points in 17 ODI matches. South Africa remain in 11th place with just 59 points from the 15 matches so far.
