After four full days of rigorous cricket, India bagged a victory very early on the fifth day of the first Test against hosts Bangladesh. While the game started off on a balanced note, with both teams putting up tough competition, the momentum shifted towards India as the game progressed. Comprehensive efforts from both batters and bowlers helped the Indian side take a 1-0 lead.

The first day started off with Indian batters Shreyas Iyer and Cheteshwar Pujara resurrecting the innings after failed efforts from Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli. Though Iyer could not do much on the second day, the 87-run eighth-wicket stand between Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav helped India end their first innings at 404. Not to forget the two brilliant sixes hit by Umesh Yadav in his unbeaten 10-ball 15-run knock.

After a terrific batting display, bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav did a brilliant job as the hosts ended the second day at 133/8. It was sheer dominance from the Indian batters in the second innings as Gill and Pujara hit their respective tons and handed India a big lead. The centuries by the two prompted India to declare their innings at 258/2.

Bangladesh had to chase 513 runs to win the first Test. Openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan powered Bangladesh to a massive start as they shared a 124-run partnership. While the former hit 67 runs off 156 deliveries, the latter went on to score a marvelous 100, in what was his debut Test match, before getting dismissed.

Their dismissal led to Bangladesh losing momentum, and Indian bowlers taking complete advantage. Spinners Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav dominated with the ball in the final innings, but Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan kept the game going from his end. His hitting was brought to an end by Kuldeep on the final day, and Bangladesh’s batting unit came tumbling down. Patel picked up four wickets, while Kuldeep ended with three as India bagged a 188-run victory.
